Privacy and responsible use
Clear expectations for everyone in the room.
SideEye is a live second-camera tool for remote interviews and assessments. This page explains what the current student-built preview does, what it does not do, and how recruiters should use it fairly.
Last updated August 22, 2026
What camera access means
The candidate's browser asks for permission before sharing a camera. SideEye requests video only. It does not request the microphone, contacts, files, messages, browsing history, or the contents of the candidate's laptop.
The candidate can see their own camera preview, change the selected camera or lens, and stop sharing at any time.
What the service processes
To create and operate a room, SideEye processes random session identifiers, protected role credentials, room state, timestamps, candidate display labels, participant presence, and recruiter control actions. A privacy-preserving network identifier is used for hourly abuse prevention.
Recruiter credentials are stored as one-way hashes. Candidate invite credentials are encrypted before storage. Private session pages are marked not to be indexed or cached.
Video transport and storage
Live video is carried through VDO.Ninja's WebRTC-based video service. Network relays may be used when a direct connection is not possible. SideEye does not provide a recording feature and does not save the video stream.
Session links are temporary and sessions expire after four hours. Ending a session immediately ends access, although limited operational records may remain in the service database for security, reliability, and troubleshooting.
Candidate choice
Candidates should receive the purpose of the second camera before joining. They can decline browser permission, stop sharing, or leave. Recruiters should offer a reasonable alternative when a candidate cannot use a second device or needs an accessibility accommodation.
Responsible use for recruiters
- Use the extra view only for the stated interview or assessment.
- Explain what will be visible and how long the session will last.
- Do not use video alone as proof of misconduct or as an automated hiring decision.
- End access as soon as the interview or assessment is complete.
- Follow the privacy, employment, and accessibility rules that apply in your location.
